A fire can move quickly so every moment is vital.in order to guarantee ultimate safety for your family you should invest in the best smoke alarm possible. At GoKonnect our house alarm systems have your safety in mind.

It's vital for your smoke alarm to be installed and cared for properly .in this article we give you a step-by-step guide from a professional on how the best way to install a home alarm.

Can you install smoke detectors yourself?

Electrical wiring can be tricky, so it's always the best option to go with a trusted electrician to do the installation job. They will ensure that the installation process is done correctly and follows the manufacturer’s instructions, which allows your home to be as safe as possible.

At GoKonnect smart home security we will send out a professional to install the combo of snake alarm and CO detector. we will make sure all your smart home devices work together including your house alarm.

How a professional install a hardwired smoke detector

Smoke alarms fall into 2 different categories, hardwired and battery-powered. Our experts will help you decide what's best for you.

Here are some advantages to option 1; hardwired house alarms, the hardwired smoke alarms can connect to your other home alarm, and smart home security devices— if one detects smoke they all send out an alert noise — your home's electrical source is their electrical source too. So life is similar for you as there's no need to change batteries.

The only thing to note about a hardwired smoke alarm is that during an electrical outage, it won't work. However, with modern technology, these house alarms come with a backup system that is battery-powered. Hardwired home alarms can be tricky to install correctly. Your installer will have to connect them to your home’s electrical system.

Here’s how they are installed:

Important: it's essential to turn off the power when doing this your professional installer will test this using a circuit breaker

Step 1: Place and install remodeling boxes

A remodeling box is placed where your smoke alarm will be placed.to put it simply, a remodeling box is inserted into drywall and inside an electrical box. For prime use, your alarm should be placed on the ceiling.

A stud finder will be used to find the points in the drywall. The outline of your remodeling box is placed on the drywall. A hole is then drilled into the wall. using a special saw, the outline will be cut from the wall and your remodeling box will be placed inside. It should fit in perfectly and not have to be forced in. This will be done for every house alarm that's being installed. next step; is wiring. using some 14/2 NM wire (a 14/2 cable has a sheath, two wires, and a ground wire).  A  wire will be run from your breaker box to the smoke alarm location without connecting the cable to the breaker box and tug around 10 inches of wire through the hole.

If multiple smoke alarms are being installed the wiring from alarm one will connect to the alarm number 2 and so on. When they’re done, all your smoke alarm locations should be connected by wire. This means that if one detected some smoke they would all let out an alert. This is for optimum safety.

Using tools like wire strippers the shearing from the NM wire is removed, and the hanging wire is placed back into the remodeling box and placed into the hole in your wall that was made earlier. Clamping tabs will be placed on to bind it to the wall, find the copper wire and use a ground screw secured.

Step 2: Wire the remodeling boxes

The professional will remove ¾ of an inch of insulation and attach wires to a high-volt wire in your home. Smoke detectors these days often come with their own harnesses

The NM wire will be connected with the matching colors using wire nuts.it's very important for safety that different color wires do not cross or mix together.

All locations for the smoke detectors should contain their own harness. The job of the harness is to connect the breaker box to all wires, and then they all connect to the smoke alarms. Electrical tape will be placed around the wires for your safety. the remodeling box is responsible for all other wires apart from the plug end of the wire harness should be left hanging out.

Step 3: Connect the smoke detector

After all that preparation your smoke alarm will be installed. The GoKonnect smart home security professional will pull the wire harness through the mounting plate and line up the mounting plate’s screw holes with the remodel box’s screw holes.

Out of the mounting plate, you will see a wire hanging out. This will be when the mounting plate is screwed on to the remodeling box and the wire harness plug will be attached to the back of the smoke alarm

Your battery backup system will also be set up during this process. The house alarm will be opened up and a battery will be put inside. (The most common battery for this is a 9-volt one) Then, the mounting plate will be attached to the back of the house alarm. The smoke alarm will fit nicely.

Finally, connect the NM wires to the breaker box. Again it's very important to check the power is off before doing this.

Step 4: Test the smoke detector

Once everything is connected up, the GoKonnect professional home alarm installer must reconnect the powerline to the breaker box.

A test will be done on all newly installed alarms and the light will flash if working properly. A loud siren should be heard when the tester is pressed. This shows it is working in full effect

Where to place smoke detectors in your home

Where should I place my house alarm? That's a question for the fire brigade. Fire brigade Ireland has set out some clear guidelines about smoke alarm positioning and care. Let's take a look!!

  • For every story of your home, there should be a house alarm.
  • For every in-use bedroom there should be a smoke detector
  • Smoke alarms should all connect to each other for optimum safety
  • In order for the smoke to be accurately detected smoke alarms should be placed high up for example on the ceiling.
  • False alarms can happen that's why its recommended to place smoke detectors at least 3 meters away from cooking appliances
  • If you place house alarms too close to windows or vents it can affect the working accuracy
  • If you are hearing impaired or suffer from hearing loss it would be a good idea to invest in house alarms with visual cues for example flashing lights.

Correct height placement of smoke detectors

As we have said before for the best results and the best safety it's important to place house alarms up high. Some homes have pitched roofs so we advise placing it just before the point in the roof and not actually in it as it's very closed off.
